Why a Single Monitor Boosts Focus and Productivity

Why a Single Monitor Boosts Focus and Productivity

I dismantled my multi-monitor setup to escape the constant distraction of open tabs and chats. The result wasn’t a loss of space, but a profound gain in concentration and a calmer, more ergonomic workspace.

Simplicity and minimalism are powerful principles in software development. In a world often characterized by complexity and overload, simple solutions frequently offer the best balance between functionality, maintainability, and user-friendliness. But this same principle of “less is more” can also apply to our physical workspace.

The Allure of Multiple Monitors

For a long time, I worked with three screens, one of them being my laptop. This was despite my previous conviction that I worked best with just a single screen. It was curiosity about what I could gain from an extra display that drove me. And, to be honest, it never felt quite right. I was initially completely enthralled by a vertical side monitor, for instance. However, it turns out that more screen real estate also means more distraction. The constant temptation to keep all sorts of things open often led to me being less able to concentrate.

The Downside of the Multitasking Illusion

Distraction from too many open windows and applications is a real problem. It pulls at your concentration and decreases productivity. This is why I decided to simplify my work environment. I parted ways with the additional monitors and now work exclusively with just one screen. This decision has fundamentally changed how I work.

The Gains in Focus and Ergonomics

Now, there is only one concrete focus. No more perpetually keeping one eye on various chats or other distractions. Just the work in front of me. My body thanks me for it, too. With multiple screens, I often found myself in a poor, un-ergonomic posture. The workspace feels much calmer and more relaxed as a result. And I’m not even a fan of huge monitors—a 24-inch screen is perfectly sufficient for me.
