Why Web Apps Are My Go-To
Cross-Platform Solution

Web apps have been my preferred cross-platform technology for over 20 years. I explore their advantages, from instant updates to broad device compatibility, and why they’re often overlooked despite their versatility.

Why do I prefer web apps over other cross-platform technologies? It has been a constant that has always accompanied me for more than 20 years. The web—and today’s web apps—are cross-platform by definition. And the continued development is incredible.

Of course there are applications where a web app makes no sense. On the other hand, I’m sure many have never considered this technology. PWAs would play a role here, especially in the mobile environment. And the marketing around it is certainly much quieter than that of the alternatives.

Everyone knows what a native app can do. React Native should also be familiar to everyone. Even Flutter is no longer a technical toy. Followed by Maui, which is becoming more and more famous, at least by name. Kotlin Multiplatform also follows suit. But you don’t always need a native app.

Web-native is available immediately as soon as the update is on the (own) server. No waiting for app store approvals. No additional costs. Nobody who wants to share in the income. Immediately usable on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. And all other devices that have a browser. This should also apply to game consoles etc.

Web apps are not for everyone. They don’t solve every problem either. They have limitations. With all the many frameworks and libraries, it is also an extremely mixed environment. And yet they should still be considered. And if necessary, decide on an alternative.
