Final Reflection

For me, WslDock is a complete success. It has become a tool that accompanies me daily without me even noticing it. It’s specialized, absolutely transparent, and solves exactly the defined scope for which it was designed.

Lessons Learned

The journey through development has taught me important lessons:

  • Reusing Proven Patterns: The C + Zig stack from StayAwake provided a solid foundation, allowing focus on WSL-specific logic rather than reinventing infrastructure.
  • Production Hardening: Real-world use revealed edge cases (SSH timing, retry logic) that weren’t apparent in initial testing. Each fix made the tool more robust.
  • The Value of Minimalism: By limiting the scope to three states and a tray interface, the tool achieves a level of simplicity that makes it disappear into the workflow.

The Final State

Version 0.1.5 represents the mature state of the project:

  • WSL persistence: Reliable sleep infinity anchoring
  • SSH tunnels: Stable agent forwarding with keep-alive
  • Retry logic: Non-blocking connection attempts
  • Autostart: Automatic registry update on each launch
  • mise integration: Seamless installation and updates

What’s Next

WslDock in its current form is “finished” and diligently does its job. The tool has proven its value in daily development work, maintaining persistent WSL environments and SSH tunnels without intervention.

The WslDock project demonstrates that the true strength of a utility lies in its invisibility. When a tool works so well that you forget it’s running, it has achieved its goal. The progression from initial concept to production-hardened release shows how iterative refinement, guided by real-world use, creates tools that truly serve their purpose.
